TSgt Jeffrey Bray

24th STS

A Combat Controller with the 24th Special Tactics Squadron, TSgt Bray was awarded the Silver Star for his actions during the "Black Hawk Down" incident (1993). He developed an ingenious perimeter marking system and coordinated gunship fire from a rooftop, saving numerous lives. Trapped in the hostile city of Mogadishu overnight with a surrounded Ranger element, TSgt Bray lacked conventional night-vision targeting equipment. Improvising under fire, he instructed the Rangers to place infrared strobe lights on the perimeter to mark their positions. He then exposed himself on a rooftop to direct AH-6 Little Bird helicopters, telling them to fire just meters outside the strobe line. His calm and inventive application of airpower throughout the night prevented the position from being overrun.
