A Pararescueman/Combat Controller element member with the 24th Special Tactics Squadron, TSgt Zerbe was killed in the Extortion 17 crash. He was awarded the Bronze Star with Valor for eliminating a high-ranking Taliban leader during a prior deployment. TSgt Zerbe was aboard the fateful CH-47 helicopter shot down over the Tangi Valley in 2011 while rushing to support pinned-down Rangers. His loss was a devastating blow to the elite 24th STS. During his prior deployments, TSgt Zerbe showcased the lethal effectiveness of a Combat Controller, directing critical air support under fire and taking direct action against high-value targets. He embodied the quiet professionalism and fierce lethality expected of a Tier 1 special operator.
