A Combat Controller with the 23rd Special Tactics Squadron, TSgt Campbell received the Silver Star for actions in Kandahar (2010). He ran 300 meters through enemy fire to mark a target and directed 22 airstrikes, neutralizing a massive insurgent force. When his element was pinned down in a Taliban stronghold, TSgt Campbell repeatedly exposed himself to rocket-propelled grenades and PKM machine gun fire. Recognizing air support was their only option, he sprinted into an open field to physically mark enemy positions for incoming fighters. Despite near-constant incoming fire, he calmly directed a symphony of aircraft over several hours, destroying fortified enemy compounds and ultimately allowing his ground force to complete their mission and extract safely without any friendly casualties.
