'Big Andy,' a Combat Controller with the 24th Special Tactics Squadron, was killed in the Extortion 17 Chinook crash. He was a recipient of two Bronze Stars with Valor and two Purple Hearts, known for his leadership and bravery. SSgt Harvell was part of a Quick Reaction Force scrambling to assist an Army Ranger element engaged in a heavy firefight in the Tangi Valley. Tragically, the CH-47 Chinook helicopter carrying his team was shot down by a rocket-propelled grenade, resulting in the loss of 38 lives, including 30 Americans. Prior to this tragic event, 'Big Andy' was known throughout the Special Tactics community for his physical prowess, tactical acumen, and unwavering dedication to the mission.
